Liability Insurance

Navigating the complexity of aircraft insurance coverage can be confusing. Here is a common question I often get from prospective clients.

TIP: Does my Personal Umbrella Policy extend to aviation?

Although most personal umbrella policies exclude aviation risks, it's a good idea to double check by reviewing your policy. If your aircraft is registered under a  corporation then a personal umbrella policy won't cover it. Typically umbrella  liability policies exclude all aviation related risks. The best way to protect your  assets is by having enough liability coverage included with your Aircraft Policy.

Your hull and liability policy should be written to include not only the value of your aircraft  but also the amount of liability insurance needed depending on who is flying on a regular  basis. For example: A corporate aircraft carrying the principles of the company on a  regular basis may need a higher amount of liability coverage. If you determine you need a  large amount of liability coverage, it may take several insurance carriers dividing the  risk. Not every carrier will be interested in fully covering a large liability claim, however they  may be willing to accept 50% with another carrier picking up the remaining amount. These  are good discussions to have with your agent before you bind coverage rather than after an  accident occurs.
